Tornadoes in the Oklahoma City Area

A History of Destruction

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been tracking tornadoes in the Oklahoma City area since 1893. Since then, there have been over 160 tornadoes documented in the metro area. The most infamous tornado was the violent long-lived tornado that struck on May 3, 1999. This tornado was part of an unprecedented outbreak that produced nearly 60 tornadoes in central Oklahoma. The tornado caused widespread damage and killed 36 people.

Recent Tornadoes

In recent years, there have been several significant tornadoes in the Oklahoma City area. In 2013, an EF5 tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma, causing extensive damage and killing 24 people. In 2016, an EF3 tornado struck El Reno, Oklahoma, killing two people and injuring dozens more. And in 2019, an EF2 tornado struck Oklahoma City, causing damage to homes and businesses.

Tornado Safety

Tornadoes are a dangerous and unpredictable weather phenomenon. If you live in an area that is prone to tornadoes, it is important to be aware of the risks and to take steps to protect yourself and your family. Here are some tornado safety tips:

  • Be aware of the weather forecast and be prepared to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
  • Have a designated safe place to go in case of a tornado, such as a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of your home.
  • If you are outside when a tornado warning is issued, seek shelter in a sturdy building or lie down in a ditch and cover your head with your hands.
  • Never try to outrun a tornado in a car.

Tornado Resources

There are several resources available to help you stay safe during a tornado. The National Weather Service (NWS) provides tornado warnings and forecasts. You can also sign up for the NWS's text alert system to receive tornado warnings directly to your phone. The Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) also provides tornado safety information and resources.

By being aware of the risks and taking steps to protect yourself, you can help to ensure your safety during a tornado.
